Samantha Lawyer English

Technology teacher

“Coming from England with the wind and the rain and many grey days hurtling by, it is so inspiring to finish at the end of the day with the sun out,” “On the way home from work I pass the sea and watch the boats bobbing on the water, I see happy kids coming out of the dairy or on bikes making the most of a fun afternoon even during winter.”

says Samantha Lawyer of her new life in Auckland.

Travel had always been part of Samantha’s agenda and after teaching technology for three years, she decided she had the skills necessary to fulfil her urge for travel. As part of her plans to move to New Zealand – “a destination I’ve always been fascinated with”- Samantha kept in close contact with an approved NZ-based recruitment agent.

“During the initial transition phase, he provided regular support and answered all my questions about the move, accommodation, housing and pets,” remembers Samantha. “He was able to assist me job wise by regularly putting opportunities my way.”

Before training as a technology teacher, Samantha had worked in the theatre industry in England for six years, carrying out a range of jobs for design, scenic art and construction, so was very marketable in New Zealand.

She teaches technology, including hard materials and graphics, to all year groups at Avondale College. “I’m also teaching automotive engineering which is proving to be an exciting challenge. The course requirements differ between England and New Zealand, but the attitudes of the pupils made the leap much more attainable.”

Samantha’s appointment coincided with the technology department’s relocation to a new custom-built technology block. “I’m really enjoying being given the opportunity to develop new curriculum materials and resources for the department.”

“There are also many opportunities for pupils to recognise their true potential, both academically and practically.” Samantha adds that the pupils seem happy, well mannered in the main and secure in their environment.

Weekends offer loads of action-filled fun for Samantha. “If you need adrenalin-filled sporting activity, there’s plenty of tramping, kayaking, fishing, body boarding or even just sitting around sunbathing and reading,” says Samantha. “If you are thinking of coming to teach in New Zealand, put some savings aside to tide you through the first couple of months and tie up any loose ends so you can fully appreciate the experience,” she advises.
