Primary
In recent years the teacher supply pressure has moved from the secondary sector to both primary and secondary. The Auckland region continues to have teacher supply shortages in all sectors.
Recent Government policy announcements regarding primary school staffing are expected to increase opportunities for primary teachers in some areas of New Zealand. These measures mean most primary schools will require additional staffing.
In addition, 2007 saw the highest number of births recorded in New Zealand since 1972. Ministry of Education officials now expect to see more pupils in classrooms during the next 15 years than previously predicted.
A good proportion of primary teachers are nearing retirement age and this is also expected to affect primary teacher supply in future years.
Primary teachers with a minimum of three years relevant teaching experience are now listed on Immigration New Zealand's Immediate Skill Shortage List for work permits or residency.
